IEC (Import Export Code) is required by anyone who is looking to start an import/export business in India. It is issued by the DGFT (Director General of Foreign Trade) and is a 10-digit code which is valid for a lifetime. Importers cannot import goods without the IEC and the exporter cannot avail benefits from DGFT for the export scheme without IEC.
IEC is required if:
- An importer has to clear his shipments from the customs
- When an importer sends money out of India through banks
- When an exporter has to send his shipments
- When an exporter receives money in foreign currency directly into his bank account
Steps to apply for the IEC code online:
- Visit http://dgft.gov.in/
- Click on the option ‘Online Application’ tab from the left side on the screen and select IEC from the drop-down menu.
- Then select IEC online application
- Now, log in using the PAN number and click next
- Choose ‘New IEC Application details’
- A form will open, fill in the details and click on ‘Upload Documents’
- Upload all the relevant documents
- After filling the details and uploading the documents click on ‘Branch’ for adding any branch details
- Next, click on ‘Director’ to add details about the directors of the company
- Now, click on EFT to make the online payment
- Fill the amount details and choose a bank
- A draft invoice will be appearing. After confirming the details, click on ‘Pay now’
- Make the payment
- Once the application is complete, take a printout of the application by clicking on the ‘Print’ button
Here’s a list of required documents:
- PAN copy
- Photograph
- Bank certificate copy
- Memorandum of association
- Extract of board resolution
- Form 32 if there’s a change of directors
- Form 18 in case of change of registered office
- and an RBI approval letter in case of an NRI
Steps to apply for the IEC code offline:
- Prepare the application form in the specified format (Aayaat Niryaat Form no. 2A format) and file it with the regional DGFT office
- Now, arrange the required documents in respect of ANF2A
- Once your application is complete, the next step is filing with DGFT via DSC (Digital Signature Certificate) and paying the required registration fee.
- After the application is approved, you will receive the IEC code in soft copy
